How to Connect ActiveCampaign

The entire setup takes under a minute. Here is exactly what to do.

Find Your API Credentials

Log in to your ActiveCampaign account. Click the Settings gear icon in the bottom left, then select Developer from the sidebar. Your API URL and API Key are displayed under API Access. Copy both values using the copy buttons — even a small typo will prevent the connection from working.

Connect Your Account

In ValidEmailChecker, go to Integrations and click Connect Integration. Select ActiveCampaign, enter a friendly connection name (like "Marketing Team AC"), paste your API URL and API Key, then click Connect Account. We verify your credentials instantly and establish the connection. If you have multiple ActiveCampaign accounts, you can connect them all — just give each a unique name.

Select a List and Configure

Once connected, you will see all your ActiveCampaign lists with contact counts. Select the list you want to verify, then choose your mode: Verify Only to review results before making changes, or Clean Automatically to remove invalid and disposable emails from your ActiveCampaign list in real time. You control exactly what happens to each email type — unsubscribe, delete, or keep.

Tip: Start with "Verify Only" on your first run to review results before enabling automatic cleaning.

Track Results in Real Time

Click Start Verification and you will be redirected to the Uploads & Results page where you can watch progress in real time. No need to refresh — the page updates automatically. When complete, you get a full breakdown: safe, invalid, risky, disposable, catch-all, and more. If you chose automatic cleaning, the changes are already applied to your ActiveCampaign list.

Import and verify your list without modifying anything in ActiveCampaign. Review results, download reports, and decide what to do next — on your terms.

Managing Your ActiveCampaign Connection

Connection Actions

Click the three-dot menu next to any connection on your Integrations page:

Sync Now

Open the list selector to verify another list from this account.

Rename

Change the connection name — helpful if you have multiple accounts.

Delete

Remove this connection. Does not affect your ActiveCampaign account.

Multiple Accounts

Have multiple ActiveCampaign accounts? Connect as many as you need.

Go to Bulk Upload → Connect Email Platform → ActiveCampaign

Click "+ Add Another Account" and enter new credentials

Give each a unique name (e.g., "AC — Marketing" vs "AC — Sales")

When switching between accounts, the connection picker shows all your connected accounts. Click Sync Now on the one you want to use.

Credits & Billing

Credits Running Low?

If you do not have enough credits for your list size, you can purchase more credits instantly or set up auto-refill so you never run out during a critical verification.

Team Member Access

Team members can connect their own ActiveCampaign accounts and run verifications using the shared team credit balance. The account owner can see credits used by each team member in the transaction history.

Troubleshooting

"Invalid API credentials" Error

Make sure your API URL starts with https:// and looks like https://youraccount.api-us1.com. Copy your API Key fresh from ActiveCampaign (Settings → Developer → API Access) and check for extra spaces before or after both values.

"No lists found" Message

Your ActiveCampaign account might not have any lists yet. Create at least one list in ActiveCampaign with some contacts, then reconnect or try again.

Verification Takes Too Long

Large lists with 10,000+ contacts may take several minutes to complete. The page auto-updates in real time — no need to refresh. Check the progress bar for an estimate of time remaining.

Some Emails Show "Unknown" Status

This happens when we cannot definitively verify an email — for example, the mail server did not respond or timed out. Credits for Unknown results are automatically refunded to your account. You can re-verify these emails later.

Changes Not Appearing in ActiveCampaign

If you chose "Clean list automatically" but do not see changes in ActiveCampaign: allow a few minutes for ActiveCampaign to sync, check your "Unsubscribed" or "Deleted" contacts in ActiveCampaign, and make sure the verification completed by checking Uploads & Results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Only if you choose "Clean list automatically." The "Verify only" option imports your contacts for verification but does not modify anything in ActiveCampaign. Your original list stays exactly as it is until you explicitly choose to clean it.

Currently, you can verify lists only. To verify contacts in automations or segments, export them to a list in ActiveCampaign first, then connect that list through our integration. We are working on direct automation support for a future update.

We recommend verifying after every import of new contacts, monthly for active and growing lists, and quarterly for stable lists with minimal changes. Email data decays at roughly 2% per month, so regular verification prevents small problems from becoming big ones.

Yes. Your API key is encrypted and stored securely on our servers. We only use it to fetch your lists and — if you choose automatic cleaning — update contact statuses. We never read email content, access your campaigns, or send emails on your behalf.

Once contacts are deleted or unsubscribed via "Clean list automatically," you would need to restore them manually in ActiveCampaign. This is why we recommend trying "Verify only" first to review results before enabling automatic cleaning.

Absolutely. You can connect as many ActiveCampaign accounts as you need. Give each one a unique name (like "AC — Marketing Team" vs "AC — Sales Team") so you can tell them apart in the dashboard.

If we cannot determine whether an email is valid or invalid — for example, if ActiveCampaign's mail server did not respond — the result is marked as "Unknown" and the credit is automatically returned to your account. You only pay for definitive results.
