How to Connect Mailchimp

The entire setup takes under a minute. Here is exactly what to do.

Create Your Mailchimp API Key

Log in to your Mailchimp account. Click your profile icon in the bottom-left corner and select Profile. Click Extras in the top navigation and select API keys. Scroll down and click Create A Key, give it a descriptive name (like "Valid Email Checker Integration"), and click Generate Key.

Your API key will look like:

Full API Key (with data center suffix)

Critical: Copy the entire key including the part after the hyphen (like -us21). That suffix identifies your Mailchimp data center and is required for the connection to work. Mailchimp only shows the full key once — if you lose it, create a new one.

Connect Your Account

In ValidEmailChecker, go to Bulk Upload and click Connect Email Platform (or go to Integrations in the sidebar). Find and click Mailchimp. Enter a friendly connection name and paste the full API key including the data center suffix. Click Connect Account and we will verify your key and sync your audiences.

What we access: We only read your audiences and contact email addresses for verification. We optionally update contact statuses if you choose automatic cleaning. We never send emails, access your campaigns, or modify your automations.

Select an Audience and Configure

Once connected, you will see all your Mailchimp audiences with contact counts. Use the search bar to find specific audiences, then select the one you want to verify. Choose your mode: Verify Only to review results before making changes, or Clean Automatically to remove invalid and disposable emails directly from your Mailchimp audience. Toggle on Remove Duplicates to skip duplicate emails and save credits.

Delete is permanent:When you choose "Delete" for any email type, contacts are permanently removed from your Mailchimp audience. This cannot be undone. If you are unsure, use "Unsubscribe" instead — you can always delete later from within Mailchimp.

Track Results in Real Time

Click Import Listand you will be redirected to the Uploads & Results page where you can watch progress in real time. No need to refresh — the page updates automatically. When complete, click View Results to see the full breakdown. If you chose automatic cleaning, the changes are already applied to your Mailchimp audience.

Managing Your Mailchimp Connection

Understanding Mailchimp Audiences

Mailchimp calls contact lists "audiences." Here is what you need to know about how they work with ValidEmailChecker.

Audience = List in other platforms
Each audience can have multiple segments and tags

API Key Best Practices

Keep your Mailchimp API key secure and organized with these guidelines.

Create a dedicated key for ValidEmailChecker
Name it clearly so you remember what it is for

Delete and regenerate if you suspect compromise

Forget the data center suffix (e.g., -us21)

Troubleshooting

"Invalid API Key" Error

Make sure you copied the full key including the data center suffix (e.g., -us21). Check for extra spaces before or after the key. Verify the key has not been deleted or disabled in Mailchimp. Try generating a new API key if the current one is not working.

"No Audiences Found"

Log in to Mailchimp and confirm you have at least one audience with contacts. Check that the API key has full account access. Click Sync Now to refresh the audience list. If the issue persists, try disconnecting and reconnecting.

Audience Not Showing Up

Your audience list may be cached. Go to Integrations in ValidEmailChecker, find your Mailchimp connection, and click Sync Now from the three-dot menu. Wait a moment, then try selecting audiences again.

Verification Stuck at 0%

This is usually a temporary connection issue. Wait a few minutes — it may start processing. Check if Mailchimp is experiencing any outages. Try disconnecting and reconnecting the integration. Contact support if the issue persists.

Changes Not Appearing in Mailchimp

If you used "Clean list automatically," changes may take 5–10 minutes to sync and appear in Mailchimp. Refresh your Mailchimp audience page. Check the verification results in ValidEmailChecker to confirm actions were taken. Make sure you did not select "Verify Only" by mistake.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. ValidEmailChecker uses Mailchimp's API to read and optionally modify contacts, but it does not affect your Mailchimp subscription or billing. However, if you unsubscribe contacts (instead of deleting them), they still count toward your Mailchimp audience limit.

Currently, ValidEmailChecker imports the entire audience. To verify just a segment, you would need to export that segment from Mailchimp and upload it via file upload instead. We are working on direct segment support for a future update.

No. ValidEmailChecker verifies the emails but does not add tags or modify contact fields. Actions only include unsubscribe or delete for the "Clean list automatically" option. Your existing segments and tags remain untouched.

Archived contacts in Mailchimp are not included in the verification. Only subscribed and unsubscribed (but not archived or deleted) contacts are imported. If you need to verify archived contacts, you would need to unarchive them first in Mailchimp.

Yes. Just add a new connection with your API key. Your verification history in ValidEmailChecker is preserved — only the connection link is removed. All past results and reports remain accessible.
