What does "Cancelled" subscription status mean?

Last updated May 19, 2026Subscriptions & billing

Cancelled is the terminal status for a monthly subscription in Valid Email Checker. It means the plan has ended — no more renewals are scheduled, no more monthly credits are arriving, and the monthly bucket has been zeroed. The account itself stays intact (PAYG credits, history, API keys, integrations all preserved), but the recurring side is finished.

How a subscription ends up Cancelled

Two paths reach Cancelled. They look the same in the database but feel different from the user side.

  • You cancelled and the grace ran out. You clicked Cancel Subscription on the Billing page, the status stayed active with cancel_at_period_end = true for the rest of the cycle (badge: Ending Soon), and at current_period_end the renewal cron flipped it to Cancelled. No charge was attempted because the cancel flag was set.
  • A Past Due grace expired without payment. A renewal charge failed, you entered the 7-day past-due grace, and the deadline passed without the pending invoice being paid. The cron transitioned the status straight to Cancelled and auto-cancelled the unpaid invoice.

What Cancelled changes in your account

  • Monthly credit bucket is zeroed. You can no longer draw against monthly credits.
  • PAYG credits are untouched. The bucket they sit in is independent of subscription state.
  • The 200 welcome credits from signup (also PAYG) stay if you have not used them.
  • API keys keep working — they authenticate the account, not the subscription. Calls draw from your PAYG balance.
  • Integrations stay connected. The Klaviyo, HubSpot, Mailchimp, Make, and Zapier hooks still fire; they just consume PAYG credits instead of monthly.
  • Bulk history, single-verification history, account settings, and 2FA all persist exactly as they were.

Reactivating vs starting fresh

A nuance worth knowing — during the grace window before the status flipped, you could have clicked Reactivate and continued the same subscription as if nothing happened. Once the status is Cancelled, that path is gone. Subscribing again creates a brand-new subscription with a fresh 30-day cycle, a new current_period_end, and a clean monthly bucket. Same plan, same price, just a new row in the database.

Nothing gets deleted
Cancelled is not the same as account deletion. Your Valid Email Checker account stays, you keep your PAYG credits, your history is preserved, and you can resubscribe whenever it makes sense. If you want to remove the account entirely, see the account deletion guide.

Most users who reach Cancelled either come back on a future subscription or stay on PAYG-only. The transition is non-destructive by design.
