What action options does Valid Email Checker offer for Klaviyo? (Tag / Unsubscribe / Delete)

Last updated May 20, 2026Integrations

When you pick a Klaviyo list or segment and switch the Valid Email Checker modal to Clean List Automatically, three actions become available per result category. The dropdown labels read Keep, Unsubscribe, and Delete. The category rows are the same across every integration (Invalid, Disposable, Catch-all, Unknown, Risky). What changes is how each action lands inside Klaviyo.

How each action behaves in Klaviyo

  • Keep — VEC writes nothing back. The profile stays exactly as Klaviyo had it. Properties, event history, list memberships, and segment membership are untouched.
  • Unsubscribe — VEC calls the Klaviyo API to set the profile status to Unsubscribed. The profile remains in Klaviyo with every property and event preserved. They stop receiving marketing sends but can still receive transactional sends and contribute to analytics segments.
  • Delete — VEC removes the profile from Klaviyo. Klaviyo retains some analytics metadata at the aggregate level (event counts, conversion totals) but the individual profile record is gone. Reporting that depends on profile-level joins loses the individual line.

Default settings

The defaults match every other non-ConvertKit integration. Only Invalid and Disposable are enabled out of the box.

The Use Recommended Settings link snaps the panel back to defaults. Combine these settings with the list selection covered in how to select a Klaviyo list to verify.

What Klaviyo preserves on Unsubscribe

  • Profile properties (every custom property on the profile) — preserved.
  • Event history — every viewed-product, added-to-cart, placed-order event remains attached.
  • List memberships — the profile stays on the list, just marked Unsubscribed.
  • Segment membership — automatic, based on properties and events. Unsubscribe alters the consent property, which may move the profile in/out of consent-aware segments.
  • Flow position — Klaviyo retains the profile's position in any active flows; the flow respects the unsubscribed consent and skips email steps.
Klaviyo rate-limits bulk writes
For very large lists, the cleanup actions are queued and processed over several minutes after the verification job completes on our side. If profiles still show as subscribed 30+ minutes later, contact support — we can check the API responses on our end.

Why the title says Tag and the UI says Keep

Tag/Unsubscribe/Delete is industry shorthand for the three behaviors. Valid Email Checker uses Keep in the actual UI because that label honestly describes the no-op behavior — nothing gets written. Some other vendors silently tag every profile with their results; VEC leaves Klaviyo data alone unless you explicitly choose Unsubscribe or Delete on a category.

The Risky category in Klaviyo

Risky bundles risky, spamtrap, and role_account from the engine. Klaviyo deliverability suffers fastest from spam traps. Enabling Risky with Unsubscribe is the safe middle — your sender reputation is protected, and the profile event history survives for analytics.
